Introduction to Classic Tailoring and Applied Techniques I
The course covers the following subjects:
- History of Tailoring: This module delves into the historical evolution of tailoring, tracing its roots back to the medieval era and charting its journey to contemporary practices. Students will investigate diverse tailoring traditions from across the globe and examine the key forms and innovations that have significantly shaped this esteemed craft.
- Introduction to Textiles & the Textile Industry: Students are introduced to various fabric types used in tailoring, learning about their properties and characteristics. They gain expertise in selecting appropriate fabrics for different garments and sewing diverse materials.
- Basic Vest Pattern Drafting: This module teaches students how to accurately measure clients and draft a basic vest pattern on paper.
- Garment Construction I: Students learn to construct garments using traditional tailoring techniques. They practice hand-stitching methods, including basting, fell stitching, backstitching, herringbone and double herringbone stitch, padding stitch, blind stitch, and hand-made buttonholes.
- Finishing and Pressing I: This module focuses on professional finishing and pressing techniques. Students learn to use interlining materials, design and sew pockets and darts, and press different types of fabrics.
- Styling I: This module introduces the fundamentals of color theory and styling harmony. Students learn to select complementary colors, create balanced looks, and apply aesthetic principles to design garments that enhance the client’s appearance and reflect timeless elegance.
